Its observance and significance arises from the signing of the Armistice between the Allied forces of World War I and Germany in France in 1918. The signing called for the end of hostilities on the Western Front and took effect at eleven o’clock-“the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month”. The date became a national holiday both in the U.S. and across the globe and is still referred to as Remembrance Day in many nations.

Carrot-Top was affected vicariously by the attack on the Republican Headquarters in Orange County a couple of weeks ago. A Molotov cocktail was thrown through the window and derogatory statements were painted on the walls of the GOP headquarters in Hillsborough. Furniture and several campaign signs burned inside the strip-mall office and the words “Nazi Republicans leave town or else” were spray-painted on a nearby building. The firebombing, which classifies as an act of domestic terrorism, was defined by NC Governor Pat McCrory as an “an act of intimidation” and McCrory committed to finding “the individual or individuals who committed this assault on our democracy.” That attack on the Orange County Headquarters resonated throughout the nation gaining coverage in several national television and newspaper outlets.

Carrot-Top, like thousands of small and large businesses across our nation, is filled with people facing a wide range of issues that affect our lives: rising costs, child care, parental care, health concerns and other matters.  Americans all across our nation are constantly juggling life and work in hopes of improving our lives or simply trying to survive. If we are lucky, and those of us here at Carrot-Top are, our places of employment are not just locations where we log, four, eight or twelve hour shifts.  They are places where diverse people work together and, perhaps, become friends-- learning and sharing the experiences and events that shape each other’s lives. If we are extremely lucky, those friends become like a family, sharing good times and uplifting each other in tougher times.  A few years ago one of the members of our Carrot-Top family faced (and continues to face) one of the toughest battles of her life.
