Ohio State Flags
The Ohio State flag represents the “Buckeye State” with flair and originality. Designed by John Eisenmann for the Pan-American exposition in 1901, the Ohio flag is the only non-rectangular U.S. state flag. The Ohio flag is based on those carried by Ohio troops during the Civil and the Spanish-American Wars. Officially termed a burgee, the Ohio flag is a swallowtail flag. Its colors and elements symbolize the state’s natural features and order of admission into the union. The red and white horizontal stripes represent the roads and waterways of the state. The seventeen white stars in a triangular blue field symbolize the state’s hills and valleys. Ohio was the seventeenth state to join the Union. Thirteen stars grouped around an “O” represent the original 13 colonies.
