The Air Force patch features an ultramarine blue shield with a gold border with a white star on the lower segment of the shield. The center of the circle is super imposed with a red circle. Above the white star are two golden wings at a 45 degree angle facing opposite directions. The blue background is a symbolic representation of air, the operating medium of the Air Force. The white star with red circle represents Army and Navy Airplanes. The golden wings stand as a symbol for victory. The design is said to have been inspired by Winston Churchill’s “V for Victory”. Beneath the shield is a white ribbon with the words “US AIR FORCE” sewn in blue on a white background.
These 3” Air Force Patches take after the Army Air Corps symbol commonly known as the Hap Arnold Wings, first approved in 1942. The symbol was designed by Mr. James T. Rawls a member of staff under General Henry H. Arnold commander of the AAF during World War II.
