The Department of Homeland Security proudly features the departments seal front and center. The DHS seal consists of a white spread-winged American eagle in a circular blue field. Around the eagle are the words “U.S. DEPARTMENT OF” in the top half and “HOMELAND SECURITY” in the bottom half placed in a ring. The DHS seal is laden with symbolic meaning, the eagle’s spread wings extend beyond the circle around it. This is to symbolize the DHS’ dedication to breaking the mold of governmental action and handle issues differently. The eagle is also seen holding 13 arrows in one talon and an olive branch with 13 leaves in the other similar to the eagle on the Great Seal of the United States. The DHS flag’s seal also features a shield centered in front of the eagle’s breast. The shield features divided sections with a symbolic representation of air, land and sea.
