The 101st Airborne patch features an eagle’s head inside a black shield above the shield is are the words “AIRBORNE” stitched on to a black background. The eagle featured on the 101st Airborne divisions insignia is said to have been part of the Eau Claire Eagles who later became part of the federal service. The eagle mascot remained and was adopted as the official insignia when the troop became the 101st Airborne division in 1921.
