The U.S Merchant Marine, during times of peace, is used for commercial purposes (for exporting and importing) and becomes an auxiliary arm of the Navy during times of war or when needed in national emergencies. In times of war the U.S. Merchant Marine fleet is used to transport troops and war provisions and the mariners are trained to assist in manning the guns and operate the ships. The U.S Merchant Marine played a large role during World War II and recorded significant casualties to personnel and vessels.
