The flag of Togo features five stripes and a red square placed on the upper hoist end (side closer to the flagpole) with a white five-pointed star placed on it. The five stripes are colored green and yellow. The top most is green and the colors alternate all the way to the fifth stripe which is also colored green. The three colors represent the pan-African movement and acts as an ode to the Ethiopian flag. The red square is a sign of loyalty and nationalism in the people of the country. The green color stripes represent hope, agriculture and fertility. The yellow stripes signify the mineral wealth of the country. The star in the center of the red square stands for purity, peace, harmony and the nation’s independence. This flag design was adopted in 1960 with the official proclamation of independence of Togo from France. The flag was designed by Ahyi Paul, the design turned out to be the winner of a competition held in 1958.
