Pine Tree Flag Historical Background

The pine tree flag was used 100 years before the 1775-1783 Revolutionary War, as a symbol of New England and Massachusetts. The pine tree flag was flown over armed ships sailing down the Charles River to attack British-held Boston. In 1775, Colonel Joseph Reed, Washington's military secretary, requested the pine tree flag be used by all American ships so they could identify each other. The Massachusetts Navy officially adopted the pine tree flag in 1776. The original "pine tree flag" is the jack form of the "Bunker Hill" flag and the generic name for many flags Massachusetts and New England used from 1686 to 1776.
