The 101st Airborne flag is an iconic symbol for the entire U.S Army Department. The Eagle featured on the Screamin Eagle flag was first part of the militia group known as the Eau Claire Badgers. The Eau Claire Badgers’ commanding officer at the time Captain John E Perkins, managed to buy himself the bald eagle from a man named Daniel Mccann of Eagle Point, Wisconsin. The militia company quickly adopted the name of Eau Claire Eagles and the bald eagle as their mascot. Perkin’s group then later became part of the federal service and were renamed Company C, 8th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The eagle mascot remained and the regiment was nicknamed the Eagle Regiment. At that same point the eagle was christened ‘Old Abe’ in honor of President Abraham Lincoln. Old Abe’s head, in profile, was adopted as the official insignia of the 101st Airborne division in 1921.
