The 1st Marine Division patch consists of a blue diamond with the number 1 superimposed in red. Inside the number 1 is the word Guadalcanal with the Southern Cross constellation represented using white five pointed stars. The Guadalcanal missions were some of the most crucial victories by the 1st Marine division and the missions are said to have started under the Southern Cross. The cross and Guadalcanal therefore plays a large role in the makeup of the patch. The 1st Marine division patch represents the largest unit it the Marine Corps today with about 19000 combat ready men and women. The 1st division is also the oldest unit of the Marine Corps and is nicknamed “the old breed”. The patch is also sometimes called the “blue diamond”, now this term is also used to refer to the unit.
