North Carolina State Flags
The North Carolina State flag proclaims the state’s rich American traditions and celebrates the “Tarheel state’s” strides toward American independence. The North Carolina flag consists of a blue union containing a five pointed star set between the letters “N” and “C”. Gold banners above and below the star bear two significant dates. May 20, 1775 notes the date of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, the first official action calling for independence made in thirteen colonies. April 12, 1776 marks the signing of the Halifax Resolves which paved the way for the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence less than three months later. Red, white and blue are traditional American colors. The single white star signifies North Carolina’s position as one of the original 13 colonies.
